How engagement rate is calculated

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Views × 100

This formula measures the percentage of viewers who actively engaged with the content. It only uses publicly visible signals — likes and comments — so it works equally well for your own videos and competitor videos.

FAQ

Engagement rate questions answered

How is YouTube engagement rate calculated?

Engagement rate is calculated as: (Likes + Comments) / Views × 100. This gives you the percentage of viewers who actively engaged with the video beyond just watching it.

What is a good YouTube engagement rate?

For most channels, 1–3% is considered average. Above 3% is strong. Above 5% is excellent and suggests the content is highly relevant to its audience. Smaller channels often see higher rates because their audiences are more invested.

Why does engagement rate matter?

Engagement rate is a stronger signal of content quality than raw views. A video with 10,000 views and 500 likes is performing much better for its audience than a video with 10,000 views and 20 likes. It also influences how YouTube's algorithm distributes content.

Should I include shares in engagement rate?

The standard formula uses likes and comments because those are publicly visible. Shares and watch time data are only available in YouTube Studio for your own channels, so they cannot be used when analysing competitor videos.

How can I track engagement rate across multiple videos and channels?

Channel Radar calculates and tracks engagement rate for all videos across every channel you add to your workspace. You can rank videos by engagement rate and compare how different channels perform over time.
